Custom Pool Design
in Sugarmill Woods, Citrus County, Florida

Year-round weekly service is standard. Warm water temperatures and near-daily summer rains accelerate algae proliferation, requiring 52-week chemical monitoring.

Standard sanitizers (liquid chlorine/tabs), muriatic acid for pH reduction, sodium bicarbonate for alkalinity, and basic shock treatments are covered under full service.

Chemical balance, basket clearing, and equipment checks are always performed. In heavy downpours or lightning storms, netting and brushing proceed as weather windows permit to ensure chemical stabilization isn't skipped.

The active-adult and master-planned communities along the Highway 200 corridor—such as On Top of the World, Stone Creek by Del Webb, and Oak Run—have strict Architectural Review Committees (ARCs). They enforce precise rules regarding property boundary setbacks, equipment acoustic dampening and screening, pool cage frame colors, and roofline tie-in heights. At SMW Pools, our design team produces comprehensive architectural submission packages—including surveyed site plans, 3D renderings, equipment layouts, and paver material samples—to help ensure swift, hassle-free committee approval.

Unlike the pure coastal sands found closer to the Gulf, SW Marion County and Ocala often feature dense red clay seams overlying cavernous limestone layers. Heavy clay expands when saturated with water and contracts during dry spells, which can exert substantial lateral stress on an improperly engineered pool shell. SMW Pools custom-engineers every pool structure with reinforced steel rebar grids, structural shotcrete, and proper sub-base grading to ensure lifelong structural stability and prevent cracking from regional soil movement.

Yes. The Marion County Building Safety Department requires structural and electrical permits for all in-ground pool construction, major remodels, shell resurfacing, and screen enclosures. Permitting also enforces Florida Residential Building Code safety mandates, requiring either a full enclosure with self-closing and self-latching hardware, perimeter safety fencing, or approved pool entry alarms. SMW Pools handles the entire drafting, engineering, and permitting process directly with Marion County from initial submission to final inspection.

Ocala typically sits 5 to 10 degrees cooler in the winter than coastal Florida, which makes reliable heating essential for year-round swimming. As an Authorized Hayward Warranty Repair Center, we install high-efficiency Hayward HeatPro® titanium heat pumps paired with digital solar controllers. For homeowners who want on-demand spa heating even during freezing winter cold snaps, we also install hybrid gas/propane heaters that heat water rapidly regardless of ambient air temperature.

Yes! A substantial portion of our work across Marion Oaks and older Ocala subdivisions involves full pool modernization. If your pool plaster is rough, stained, or peeling, we strip it down, repair any structural fissures, and apply long-lasting quartz or aggregate pebble finishes. We also update old, cracked concrete decks with cool-touch travertine pavers, replace outdated waterline tile with modern porcelain, and upgrade aging, energy-draining pumps to quiet, variable-speed Hayward systems.

Villages of Citrus Hills (Terra Vista, Brentwood, Belmont Hills) and nearby Black Diamond Ranch operate under detailed Architectural Review Committee (ARC) design guidelines. These covenants dictate strict property line setbacks, equipment screening, deck height limits, enclosure colors, and drainage plans. At SMW Pools, our design team prepares comprehensive HOA submittal packages—including detailed site plan surveys, 3D/CAD layout blueprints, landscape buffer disclosures, and material samples—guaranteeing a frictionless approval process with your community association.

Homeowners in Citrus Hills often favor high-end, resort-style entertaining features that integrate seamlessly with expansive lanai spaces. Popular upgrades include oversized tanning ledges (sun shelves) with built-in umbrella sleeves and bubbler jets, spillover spas with therapy jets, sheer descent water curtains, natural stacked stone accents, and sunken fire pit lounges. We also specialize in matching full-backyard travertine patio extensions and outdoor summer kitchen connections.

In upscale master-planned communities, curb appeal and long-term durability are paramount. Poured or acrylic-coated concrete decks are vulnerable to fading, surface staining, and cracking under Central Florida’s shifting soils and UV exposure. Premium natural travertine pavers (such as French pattern silver, walnut, or ivory) remain remarkably cool to barefoot touch under blazing summer heat, provide natural non-slip texture, and can shift with minor subsoil movement without structural fracturing.

Yes. As an Authorized Hayward Warranty Repair Center, we install and configure Hayward OmniLogic® and OmniHub® smart pool automation systems. These systems allow you to control filtration schedules, LED color lighting themes, water features, heater temperatures, and salt chlorination directly from your iPhone or Android device—or even integrate with smart home voice assistants like Amazon Alexa.

Unlike coastal lowlands, Citrus Hills and parts of Lecanto sit on higher, rolling ridge terrain featuring sandy soils over limestone strata. Building on sloping lots often requires engineered retaining walls, tailored grading, and specialized footer configurations to ensure structural integrity and proper stormwater runoff away from home foundations. Our state-certified pool contractors engineer every pool shell with reinforced steel rebar grids and monolithic structural shotcrete customized to your lot's exact topographic profile.

Yes! A substantial portion of our work in Inverness involves complete pool modernization. Older pools often suffer from cracked, rough plaster, outdated cantilevered concrete coping, and obsolete single-speed pumps that drive up electric bills. We strip aging marcite down to the concrete shell, apply long-lasting quartz or aggregate pebble finishes, replace faded waterline tile with modern porcelain or glass mosaics, add tanning ledges (sun shelves) with bubblers, and install energy-efficient Hayward variable-speed pumps.

Yes. Properties surrounding Lake Tsala Apopka, Lake Henderson, and Lake Hernando have unique soil moisture profiles and fluctuating groundwater levels depending on seasonal rainfall. When building new pools or resurfacing existing ones near the lakes, we utilize continuous dewatering during excavation, install hydrostatic relief valves, and ensure the pool shell is engineered with reinforced structural shotcrete to resist shifting soil and hydrostatic pressure.

Yes. If your property is within Inverness city limits, permits are reviewed by the City of Inverness Community Development Department; if you are in unincorporated Inverness or Floral City, permits are pulled through the Citrus County Building Division. Both jurisdictions require structural engineering plans, electrical permits, and Florida Building Code safety barrier compliance (such as child safety fencing or an approved screen enclosure). SMW Pools handles every step of drafting, permitting, and scheduling inspections so you don’t have to worry about bureaucratic delays.

Upgrading an older single-speed pump to an ENERGY STAR® certified Hayward TriStar® or MaxFlo variable-speed pump can reduce your pool’s electrical consumption by up to 70% to 80%, saving hundreds of dollars annually on your Duke Energy bill. Because Sugarmill Woods Pool & Spa is an Authorized Hayward Warranty Repair Center, your new equipment is installed to factory specifications and backed by extended warranty protection.

Traditional poured or painted concrete decks commonly found on older Inverness homes are prone to cracking when the ground settles and frequently peel under intense Florida sunlight. Natural travertine pavers are installed on an engineered sand and crushed stone base, allowing the deck to naturally expand and contract with the soil without cracking. Furthermore, travertine stays significantly cooler under foot during hot summer days, offers superior wet-surface traction, and adds substantial aesthetic and resale value to your home.

Crystal River is surrounded by natural springs, riverways, and coastal wetlands, creating a shallow groundwater table. If an in-ground pool is not properly engineered, hydrostatic water pressure can lift or damage a pool shell. At Sugarmill Woods Pool & Spa, our state-licensed builders (CPC1549560 / CPC1458326) custom-engineer every pool with heavy-duty reinforced steel, structural shotcrete, and continuous dewatering wellpoints during excavation. We also incorporate dedicated hydrostatic relief valves to protect the pool structure against underground water pressure for decades to come.

Yes. Many properties in Crystal River—especially near Kings Bay, Fort Island Trail, and Dixie Shores—sit within designated AE or VE flood zones. Installing a pool and screen enclosure in these areas requires adherence to strict coastal setback rules, elevation requirements, and specialized electrical and equipment pad elevations above base flood height. We handle the entire engineering, drafting, and permitting process with the City of Crystal River and Citrus County building departments to ensure your project is 100% code-compliant.

In coastal environments, salt air and heavy humidity will quickly deteriorate thin painted concrete cool-decks. Natural travertine pavers are the gold standard for Crystal River homes because they are naturally salt-tolerant, impervious to moisture rot, stay cool under the hot sun, and offer excellent non-slip traction for wet swimmers coming off boats or docks. For the pool interior, upgraded aggregate pebble finishes provide the highest resistance to fluctuating mineral levels and chemical wear compared to standard marcite plaster.

Yes, saltwater pools are extremely popular throughout Crystal River for their silky feel and ease of maintenance. However, coastal environments require equipment that resists corrosion. As an Authorized Hayward Warranty Repair Center, we install commercial-grade Hayward AquaRite® salt systems paired with high-efficiency, corrosion-resistant variable-speed pumps, titanium heat pumps, and sacrificial zinc anodes to safeguard pool ladders, lights, and deck hardware against electrolytic wear.

Absolutely. Many older coastal homes in the Crystal River area feature outdated pool shells with cracked plaster, failing coping, or obsolete single-speed equipment. We specialize in complete pool renovations—stripping old plaster, installing modern glass waterline tile, adding sun shelves or built-in bench seating, extending travertine deck spaces, and replacing aging pumps and filters with whisper-quiet, energy-efficient automation systems.

Sugarmill Woods is famous for its preserved wooded greenbelt easements that wrap around almost every residential property. These greenbelts create peaceful nature buffers, but they also have strict property setback and tree preservation restrictions enforced by the community and Citrus County. At SMW Pools, our showroom and offices are right here in the community—we know the local plat maps and easement rules inside and out. We design custom pools, screen enclosures, and deck footprints that maximize your backyard living space while staying fully compliant with all deed restrictions and setback requirements.

Whether you live in Cypress Village, Oak Village, or Southern Woods, exterior additions like new pool builds, screen cage extensions, and paver installations require approval from the local Architectural Control Committee (ACC). Because we’ve worked in Sugarmill Woods for over 15 years, our team prepares complete submission packets—including site surveys, detailed CAD layout drawings, equipment placement plans, and paver material samples—ensuring your review and approval process goes smoothly.

The dense pine and oak canopies in Sugarmill Woods drop pine needles, leaves, and organic tannins that can stain porous, painted concrete decks. We strongly recommend natural travertine pavers or sealed interlocking brick pavers for pool decks and patios. Travertine is naturally mildew-resistant, non-slip when wet, easy to pressure wash without damaging paint, and resists heat buildup. For the interior pool finish, upgraded quartz or pebble aggregate surfaces provide superior defense against organic staining and chemical imbalances compared to standard white marcite plaster.

Yes! Unlike out-of-town contractors who work out of a truck, Sugarmill Woods Pool & Spa has a dedicated showroom right in the community at 6330 South Tex Point, Homosassa/Sugarmill Woods. You can view physical samples of travertine pavers, coping, mosaic and waterline tiles, interior pebble finishes, and modern Hayward automation systems. Stop by our showroom or call (352) 382-4421 to schedule a personal design walk-through.

Many homes in Sugarmill Woods and southwestern Citrus County utilize private wells or local utility supplies with elevated mineral hardness, calcium, and iron content. Untreated well water can cause rapid scaling on salt cells, heater elements, and waterline tile. As an Authorized Hayward Warranty Repair Center, we configure pools with high-efficiency cartridge or DE filtration, automated salt chlorinators, and specialized mineral sequestration systems to keep your water crystal-clear and protect your equipment from premature scaling.

Yes. The Hernando County Building Department requires building and electrical permits for all new in-ground pool construction, major remodels, pool resurfacing, and equipment modifications. State and local building codes also mandate approved safety barriers, such as 48-inch child safety fencing, screen enclosures with self-closing and self-latching gates, or approved pool alarms. When you partner with Sugarmill Woods Pool & Spa, our team handles the entire engineering, drafting, and permitting process directly with Hernando County, ensuring your project is 100% code-compliant from start to finish.

Much of Spring Hill and Hernando County features deep sandy soil alongside regions of karst terrain (limestone bedrock). Building a pool here requires proper site evaluation, soil compaction, and reinforced steel-and-shotcrete engineering designed specifically for Central Florida ground movement. At SMW Pools, our licensed pool builders (CPC1549560 / CPC1458326) custom-engineer every pool structure with commercial-grade plumbing and structural shotcrete to ensure lifelong durability, superior drainage, and protection against soil shifting.

Absolutely. We regularly work within Spring Hill’s premier planned communities and golf courses, including Timber Pines, Wellington at Seven Hills, Silverthorn, and Pristine Place. Because these communities have strict Architectural Review Committees (ARCs), we provide all necessary design schematics, property surveys, paver color samples, and timeline disclosures required to get your ARC approval quickly and without hassle.

For Hernando County homes, travertine pavers and premium interlocking concrete brick pavers are the top choices. Unlike traditional painted or acrylic cool-decking, which can peel, fade, or crack under intense Florida UV rays and afternoon summer thunderstorms, natural travertine stays significantly cooler on bare feet, provides superior slip resistance, and flexes with the ground without cracking. We install custom travertine and brick paver pool decks, patio extensions, and matching coping designed to withstand heavy Florida weather.

Never drain your pool before a storm—the high groundwater table in Spring Hill can cause an empty pool to "pop" out of the ground. Before a major storm, shut off power to your pool pump, salt cell, and heater at the main breaker to prevent electrical surge damage. As an Authorized Hayward Warranty Repair Center, SMW Pools provides complete post-storm equipment inspections, pump diagnostics, electrical repairs, and water rebalancing across Hernando County to get your pool running cleanly and safely after severe weather.
